The secondary uses the two thermostats to control temperatures at different locations in the secondary radiator. The primary and secondary system each have two. Your cooling system actually has 4 thermostats. Pretty unpleasant this time of year, but it works. One tip.if the engine starts to overheat, a quick and surefire way to rapidly bring down temps is turn on the heat. Top_Speed1, did you check coolant level in *both* coolant overflow bottles? One is on top / slightly right of the radiator the other is over near the brake master cylinder. The 6.7L Ford diesel has the best cooling system out there for a diesel pickup truck, period. Ambient temp was around 108*F, cruise set at 67 and the truck shifted into 4th gear and dropped all the way down to 64 pulling that hill. The highest I ever saw it get was going west out of Green River,UT on I-70 last summer pulling my Raptor. Of course, I just have a lowly 2016 so I don't see a digital readout of the coolant temperature, but the electronic gauge stays in the green zone so no worries. But I have a lot to learn about how to drive my 6.7L in the most optimal way. What has worked for me, Jim, is drop to a lower gear which makes for less load on the engine, and also increases fan speed to move more air through the radiator for increased cooling. I say this only to give some context to show that I sort of understand what's going on. The transmission on the other hand wanted those higher engine RPM's to push more fluid through the transmission. On that truck if I started to see the engine coolant temperature climb I knew I needed to throttle back and get up into a higher gear. But only with regard to the transmission temperature. On my 1/2 ton truck this is my exact strategy.

I heard fan regularly and never was forced to stop so I was pleased yet disappointed also is that wrong? Highest I saw was 248 oil and 236 coolant I believe, memory ducks. I do have 3.5 in leveling kit and 37s, I'm sure this adds strain to aerodynamics and driveline, but we made it by only stopping once or twice for preventative measures due to the grades ahead. I kept 60-65mph, back east though I was able to do 75-80mph thru mtns. Even the big rigs were doing less that 60. So I'd say we weighed total 23k-24k total right? I saw oil temp regularly at 240+ and coolant at 230+ on long grades. I towed from coastal Carolina to northside DC, then down the 81 through VA to TN then took the 40 across that week everything west of the Mississippi was 100 plus, into NM, AZ and CA was 110 plus! Truck had about 450lbs of people, 200 lbs of dogs and about 1000lbs wood ammo and tools in bed! The trailer was 32ft sticker plate said 12k, it had 4 Rtic 65 coolers loaded down, other than the normal traveling crap.
